Which frameworks does Build Your Own Audience use?

These are our own names for patterns we see in building websites with AI and in buying leads. You're welcome to use them; please credit Build Your Own Audience and link to the definition.

Buy, rent or build
Build Your Own Audience's framework for the three ways a business gets customers: buying leads from a vendor, renting attention through ads and platforms, or building an audience it owns. Buying and renting stop when the spending stops; building keeps working and compounds.Read the guide
Sameness
Build Your Own Audience's term for the first reason AI-built websites don't rank: pages produced with the same few AI tools share phrasing, structure and generic claims, so they say what thousands of other pages say and give search engines and AI assistants no reason to prefer them.Read the guide
AI driftDrift
Build Your Own Audience's term for the gradual loss of earlier decisions as content is revised with an AI tool. Each requested edit gets done, but headings, internal links, facts, structured data and calls to action change too, a little at a time, until the site no longer matches its plan.
The 80% illusion
Build Your Own Audience's name for the gap between how finished an AI-built website looks after a first fast pass, about 70 to 80 percent, and how finished it is, closer to 40 to 50 percent. The missing half is mostly structure, facts, links and code. It is a planning rule from experience, not a measured statistic.Read the guide
Six-gate processSix gates
Build Your Own Audience's method for building and auditing websites made with AI. Work passes six gates in order: positioning and intent, site architecture, content substance, technical foundation, search and entity signals, and AI answer readiness. Every time a gate is cleared, every earlier gate is re-audited, because AI edits can break what already passed.
Architect-inspector
Build Your Own Audience's model for building websites with AI: the AI does the building, and one human acts as both architect, who plans the site, and inspector, who checks every asset against the plan before it moves on.See how we work

What do the common industry terms mean?

AEOAnswer engine optimization
Answer engine optimization: the work that helps a page become the direct answer to a specific question, in a featured snippet, a voice assistant or an AI answer. It overlaps heavily with SEO and GEO.Read the guide
Aged leads
Leads that were sold fresh, usually to several buyers, and are resold weeks or months later at a steep discount, after most of their value has gone.
Core Web Vitals
Three Google measures of real-user page experience: Largest Contentful Paint for loading (good at 2.5 seconds or less), Interaction to Next Paint for responsiveness (good at 200 milliseconds or less) and Cumulative Layout Shift for visual stability (good at 0.1 or less).
Cost per customerCost per acquisition, CPA
What a paying customer cost: everything spent on a source, including sales time and returned leads, divided by the customers it produced. The number to compare across lead sources.
Cost per leadCPL
What a single lead or contact cost: spend on a source divided by the leads it produced. It says nothing about whether those leads became customers.
Doorway pages
Pages created to rank for many similar searches, such as near-identical pages for many cities, that funnel visitors to the same place. Google's spam policies treat them as abuse.
E-E-A-TExperience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust
Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust: the qualities Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines ask human raters to judge. Google says E-E-A-T is not itself a ranking factor.
Exclusive lead
A lead sold to only one business. It costs more per lead than a shared lead, but no competitor is calling the same person.
GEOGenerative engine optimization
Generative engine optimization: the work that helps AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews find, use and cite a website's content in the answers they write.Read the guide
llms.txt
A proposed plain-text file at a site's root that gives AI tools a short Markdown summary of the site and links to its most useful pages. It was proposed in 2024 and is not an adopted standard.
Owned audience
The people a business can reach directly on channels it controls, without paying a platform or vendor for each contact: website visitors who arrive on their own, email and text subscribers, past customers and community members. If someone else can switch off your access, you don't own it.
Pay per call
A lead model that delivers a live caller to a business's phone and bills only when the call meets agreed rules, such as a minimum duration.
Ping-post
A real-time auction for leads. The seller pings buyers with partial, anonymous details such as zip code and product, buyers bid or decline, and the full lead with contact details is posted to the winner or winners.
Scaled content abuse
Google's spam policy against producing many pages mainly to manipulate rankings, with little value for readers, whether the pages are written by AI, people or both.
SEOSearch engine optimization
Search engine optimization: the work that helps a website's pages rank in search engine results such as Google and Bing.Read the guide
Shared lead
A lead sold to several businesses at the same time, so every buyer races the others to make contact. Cheaper per lead than an exclusive lead.
Structured dataSchema markup
A block of code, usually JSON-LD using the schema.org vocabulary, that states facts about a business and its pages in a form search engines and AI tools can read: name, address, services, authors and page hierarchy. It must match what the page visibly says.
Topical authority
An industry term for covering one subject so thoroughly, with well-linked pages, that search engines and AI tools treat a site as a go-to source on it. Usually built as a pillar page for the broad topic plus cluster pages that each answer one specific question.
